Munster Champions Two Years Running
Congratulations to the boys U19 soccer team on retaining the John Murphy Munster Cup in the most dramatic fashion on penalties against a gallant Coláiste Ghobnatan side of Ballyvourney at Mayfield United grounds on Friday.
The boys Senior team had a long journey back to the final, and were unbeaten in their previous 5 games, most recently after a long trip to Schull winning 3-1 after extra time.
Yesterday was no different. An early Zack Mannas strike gave Coláiste Mhuire the perfect start and they went on to dominate the first half, coming close with several chances.
However in the second half, Buttevant lost their momentum and Coláiste Ghobnatan worked hard to create a few decent chances, with goalkeeper Ronan Buckley alert on several occasions. After a defensive mixup, Coláiste Mhuire conceded an own goal with just over 5 minutes remaining. Extra time loomed.
In extra time, both teams continued to attack with great energy, with Coláiste Mhuire again coming desperately close on several attacks. As the final whistle blew, it was going to have to be decided on the lottery of penalties.
With great excitement, Coláiste Mhuire players Diarmuid Doody, Paddy Behan, Josh Hudner and Dylan Finnegan all dispatched their penalties superbly, showing great nerve. After Coláiste Ghobnatan missed their second penalty, it meant Coláiste Mhuire had won 4-2 on penalties, sparking wild celebrations.
Captain Diarmuid Doody accepted the trophy on behalf of the team. Well done to all the players on a fantastic victory and we wish them the very best of luck next week in the All Ireland series! ⚽️⚫️🔴🙌
