Update on Leaving Certificate 2020

11th May 2020

Dear Parent/Student,

As I am sure you are aware, the Minister for Education and Skills Joe McHugh has announced the postponement of the Leaving Certificate Examinations 2020.

Following the decision, students are to be offered the option of receiving calculated grades for the subjects that they are studying and the alternative of sitting the 2020 Leaving Certificate examination at a date in the future when it is considered safe to hold the examinations.

The decision has been taken following an assessment of public health advice and other information and the implications for holding the exams from the previously rescheduled date of Wednesday 29 July 2020.

The Department have issued a Guide to Calculated Grades for Leaving Certificate students 2020 which is available on www.education.ie as well as on the school website at www.buttevantcolaiste.ie/news/guide-to-calculated-grades-for-the-lc-2020.

Cork Education and Training Board, on behalf of the school, is seeking answers from the Department of Education and Skills in relation to some outstanding issues and we have been assured further guidance will issue to schools shortly. In the meantime, all tuition for leaving certificate students is suspended to allow teachers to commence the processing of students estimated percentage marks (see guidelines).

It is important to note that as per 11.1 0f the DES Guide to Calculated Grades for Leaving Certificate students 2020, “the principal, deputy principal, teachers or other members of the school staff must not under any circumstances discuss with any student or with the parents or guardians of any student, the estimated marks that the school is submitting”.

Once we receive further details from the DES we will be in contact with you again.

Yours faithfully

Donal O’ Sullivan
